District Statement on Injured Student

Dear Sto-Rox School District Staff,

The Sto-Rox School District administration is saddened to learn that of one of our students was injured during an incident - a shooting - that occurred on Saturday evening.  We hope our student makes a full recovery.

Support personnel will be available on Monday and Tuesday for all students and employees. The support staff will include Sto-Rox School District counselors, social workers, and therapists from our partner agencies. If your students need to speak with someone, please send them to the guidance office. The following may be some helpful talking points as you talk with students:

  • Allow students to talk openly about their feelings. They may not know how to respond and will be looking to you for guidance.

  • Affirm all expressions. It’s okay to express feelings honestly. Accept all expressions of feelings rather than dismissing or discouraging them.

  • Affirm student reactions are normal and that you understand the way they feel.  Understand that there is no single response to grief and that sometimes reactions to sadness can be delayed.

  • Keep students’ routines as normal as possible.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis or is in emotional distress, call Resolve at 1-888-796-8226. Please reach out if we can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

Megan Van Fossan
Superintendent of Schools
