Updated: District Statement on Threatening Social Media Messages

UPDATE, 9/12/24, 7:38 a.m.: The Sto-Rox School District has an update to share regarding threats of violence against local schools circulating on social media. The below message is also being communicated via email and social media.

September 12, 2024

Dear Sto-Rox Community,

The individual responsible for Wednesday night’s social media threats has been identified. We sincerely thank our law enforcement partners for their exceptional support during this difficult time. Responding to a threat involves multiple behind-the-scenes steps, and the teamwork displayed in this situation was remarkable.

We also want to extend our gratitude to our parents, guardians, district staff, and agency partners for promptly sharing the threatening social media posts with the administration. The more information we have during crisis situations, the better we can respond. A special acknowledgment goes out to our students who shared their concerns and information with trusted Sto-Rox staff and administrators. Together, we can stand against violence and hate in our world. Our students are remarkable, resilient, and embody the true Viking spirit.

We invite the entire Sto-Rox Community to join us for the upcoming Community Coalition Peace Walk and Cookout on Tuesday, September 24, from 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. More information can be found on our website and social media channels. Only by working together can we make the world a better place.

Sincerely,

Megan Marie Van Fossan, M.A., M.Ed.
Superintendent
Sto-Rox School District

ORIGINAL POST, 9/11/24: The following is a statement from the Sto-Rox School District regarding threats of violence against local schools circulating on social media. This message is also being communicated via phone, email, and social media.

Dear Sto-Rox Community,

The district has been made aware of messages circulating on social media with lists of school communities that are facing threats of violence. We are working with our law enforcement partners to assess the credibility of this social media threat and its impact on our district. Unfortunately, this is the latest in a series of threats affecting schools across the region this week.

There will be an increased security presence at all Sto-Rox schools starting Thursday, September 12. The district is working with our security contractor, Am-Gard, and local law enforcement to ensure everyone is safe at school. The security of our students and staff is our top priority.

We know how concerning incidents like this are for our students, families, and staff. The district will monitor this situation throughout the night and remain in close communication with law enforcement as their investigation develops.

Sincerely,

Megan Van Fossan, M.A. M.Ed.
