Students at Sto-Rox Primary Center and Upper Elementary recently got a taste of different kinds of fruits and vegetables thanks to their peers at the Jr./Sr. High School. Members of Elena Mott’s Family & Consumer Science classes went ‘up the hill’ on April 3 and 4 to put on a taste test, offering pineapple and brussels sprouts.
This special interactive event was due to the Fresh Fruit and Veggie Program, or FFVP. Grant money from this program is awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to schools like Sto-Rox to help provide more fresh fruits and vegetables. Brussels sprouts is often cited as a vegetable that children - and adults - dislike. However…
“To everyone's surprise, the students loved both!” said Mott. “We had tons of students asking if they could have seconds of the brussels sprouts!"
Mott heralded this event, which has taken place in years past, as a success. It’s not just for the younger students, either.

“Every student of mine that helped cook and serve brussels didn't like them before this,” said Mott, “but they did after we served them.”
In the last two years, the Sto-Rox School District has received approximately $88,000 in FFVP funding.
