Ten Sto-Rox juniors and sophomores were honored Wednesday morning for their achievements in The Challenge Program. The Johnstown-based education initiative helps connect students with business leaders in their school districts. In Sto-Rox, Oil Service Inc. supports The Challenge Program and its honorees, who were recognized for their work in five areas: Academic Improvement, Academic Excellence, Community Service, Attendance, and STEM.
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors were told by representatives of The Challenge Programs about opportunities for students in each area of excellence, including $200 awards to further their education. Additionally, students were told about The Challenge Program’s Student of the Year contest. It’s open from now through March 1, 2024. Zay Davis (Class of 2023) was a finalist for the 2022 award; the winner receives $1,500 while two finalists receive $1,000 and seven semi-finalists each receive $100.
The Challenge Program was founded by Daniel Perkins. A Johnstown native, Pitt graduate, and Marine Corps officer, he went on to pursue a successful business career. He started The Challenge Program to help motivate students who were once like him, in the hopes that they will also succeed in life. Students watch videos featuring both Perkins and Davis as they learned about all The Challenge Program has to offer.
