Sto-Rox Upper Elementary (SRUE) students got pumped up for this month’s PSSAs by taking part in a pep rally-style event in the SRUE gym on Wednesday morning. First 5th graders, and then 4th and 6th graders, were treated to a PSSA primer by School Counselor Richard Baur and Principal Heather Johnston. It was a rousing and informative event for students, as they completed their last school day before PSSA testing starts on Monday, April 21.
“This test is just to see what you all know, “ said Baur. “Don’t be nervous. Ask questions if you don’t understand. You can absolutely ask your teachers for help.”

Both he and Johnston told students about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep before each testing date, eating breakfast the morning of the test, and being prepared and on time. They also made sure students understood the importance of trying their best.
“Do your best, take a guess,” said Johnston. “We want to make sure you don’t leave any answers blank.”
“If you leave (the answer) blank, what happens?” asked Baur. “You don’t want to get it wrong, so please try your best.”
Staff also announced an attendance incentive for students: Those who are on time for testing days will be entered into a drawing for DoorDash gift cards. Cards will be awarded at the end of each testing session (ELA, Math, and Science {Grade 5 only}).
Following the presentation, students faced their teachers in an “Are You Smarter Than…” competition, answering questions from last year’s PSSAs. After students and teachers battled it out, students took part in a balloon relay race against dinosaurs and sharks (that is, Food Services staff dressed up as dinosaurs, sharks, and other creatures).
