Why Not You? Sto-Rox Students Take "The Challenge Program" Honors

“Why not you?”

It’s a simple yet poignant question that was asked of Sto-Rox High School students on Thursday. Several students were honored by The Challenge Program, and were given the opportunity to take part in the program’s “Student of the Year” contest.

Sto-Rox students were honored for work in five areas: Academic Improvement, Academic Excellence, Community Service, Attendance, and STEM. The awards were supported by Oil Service, Inc., a Neville Island-based company. Tom Langston, of Oil Service, Inc. mentored Zay Davis, a Sto-Rox student who was a finalist for The Challenge Program’s 2022 Student of the Year contest.

Davis spoke during the assembly, encouraging students to “get out of their comfort zone.” He started the One Way Out brand, which is not only a clothing line but a positive messaging platform for the entire Sto-Rox Community.

Students also saw videos featuring Davis and Daniel Perkins, the founder The Challenge Program. Perkins is a Johnstown native, Pitt graduate, and Marine Corps officer who went on to a successful business career. He started The Challenge Program to help motivate students who were once like him, in the hopes that they will also succeed in life.

10th, 11th, and 12th graders were told by a representative of The Challenge Program about the opportunities it provides, including cash awards for students looking to further their education. One of the prime draws is that you don’t have to be “the smartest kid in the class.” The program incentivizes students at all levels to strive and thrive.

Students have until March 1st, 2023 to enter the 2023 Student of the Year Contest. Click here to learn more.
