Black History Month came to a close at Sto-Rox Jr./Sr. High School with a celebration of high-achieving students and the figures from Black history. A celebration put together by the Culture Club and outside agencies including Steel City Impact was held at the Jr./Sr. High School auditorium. Dozens of students who were eligible came down to the auditorium to engage in fun and education activities, including mural painting and games.

The Mural Club got students involved by constructing a mural with the word “UNITY” in yellow. Students were instructed to make handprints in black, green and red paint - the colors of the Pan-African Flag, representing the people of the African diaspora. Other art activities included more painting, and pencil coloring sheets.

Games included a the “Did or Did Not” quiz, a game where students guessed which inventions were created by Black inventors; a “Guess The Song” quiz, and Martin Luther King Jr. Jeopardy. Students won trinkets and other prizes for their efforts, and all students got to enjoy snacks as part of the celebration.

The event came to a close with a presentation and performance by representatives of Phi Beta Sigma, a historically black fraternity that was founded in 1914 at Howard University. See below for photos and video from this wonderful event!
