The district’s youngest learners will celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of African-Americans through music, dance, and the arts. Events will take place over two days in late February:

Jr./Sr. High School
The Culture Club has produced its annual Black history month celebration calendar. A series of fun and enriching in-school events are scheduled throughout February, leading up to the 3rd Annual SOUL (Showcasing Our Unique Legacy) celebration.
Reaching New Dreams & Recognizing Talent
Date: February 6 - 9:30 a.m.
Location: Auditorium
Description: 10th-12th graders will hear from a guest speaker about topics including leadership, sacrifice, and character development. There will also be live poetry, art, and drum performances.
Door Decorating Contest "Tune into History"
Date: February 3 - 24
Description: The Jr./Sr. High School students will hold a door decorating contest with a twist: each floor of the building will be assigned a set of decades that they will design their doors around.
• 1st floor: 50’s/60’s
• 2nd floor: 70’s/80’s
• 3rd floor: 90’s to the Present Day
7th/8th Grade Black History Month Film Fest
Dates: February 14 and February 21
Description: 7th & 8th grade students who have 10 RAISE tickets and meet other criteria will be allowed to take part in a film festival, with films tied to Black History being shown.
What’s the Tea: College Edition
Date: February 26 - 9 a.m to 10:30 a.m.
Description: Seniors will meet members of the PennWest Black Student Union, and engage in a panel discussion and lesson on diversity. Seniors will also be served a special breakfast.
Spirit Week
Date: February 24 - 28
Description: Each day will take on a special aspect of Black History, as students and staff celebrate the last week of Black History Month.
3rd Annual SOUL Celebration
Date: February 28
Criteria: Attendance (no more than 3 days absent), no OSS, and all seniors welcome.
Description: Join us for the 3rd annual SOUL (Showcasing Our Unique Legacy) celebration. Students who meet attendance (no more than three days absent) and other critera may attend this event. Performances will take place in the auditorium, and the event will feature an art showcase, food, games, and festivities.
Additionally, Ms. Paula Dugan’s SADD club will be hosting a table during lunch periods throughout the month with activities and giveaways for students and teachers.
Sto-Rox Upper Elementary
SRUE will hold a Black History Month Celebration on Friday, February 21. Parents and families are invited into the Upper Elementary Gym for a program starting at 1:15 p.m. that will include student performances and student projects.
The SRUE Beginning Band, SRUE Chorus, and Mr. Chris Scarnati’s Recorder Ensemble will perform, along a song performed by the entire student body. Students will also show off their Black History Month projects, showcasing the history behind Black figures in American History.
NOTE: All guests will be screened by security prior to this event; no bags will be allowed.
