A top resignation was one of the main issues discussed and voted upon at Thursday night’s Sto-Rox School Board meeting at the Jr./Sr. High School. You can read the complete agenda here.

Dr. Price Resigns
Jr./Sr. Principal Kim Price announced her resignation toward the end of the meeting, in a late addition to the agenda. A tearful Dr. Price described the roiling emotions within her as she made this difficult decision.

“I am full of mixed feelings. I love this place. I love our teachers. There’s nothing about this place that I don’t love. We need more resources to support what we’re doing here, and I know you all know that,” she told board members. Dr. Price pointed toward the Interrupters - presented at last week’s meeting - as a solution to let administrators focus more on their work and less on problems that crop up.

Ultimately, she said, “this district is on the right path.” Dr. Price will not leave immediately, drawing attention to a two-month departure window. “I intend to stay for the 60 days,” she said, adding, “whatever we’re going to do, we’re going to do it right.”

Student Representative’s Update
Makayla Borda presented her monthly report on the state of the student body. She discussed several events, including the mid-year CDT tests, the Winter Awards ceremony held earlier that day, and college recruiters visiting campus, facilitated by Guidance Counselor Joe Herzing. In addition, Borda highlighted the upcoming to field trip to the Carnegie Science Center, with flyers in the hallway featuring a QR code allowing students to enroll.

Borda also took a few moments to discuss Winter sports. The Boys Varsity Basketball team is under .500, but with three more wins they can qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Girls Varsity Basketball team is winding down a rebuilding year and the Unifted Bocce team got better with each match as their season came to an end on Thursday at South Fayette.

ALCOSAN Tax Money
Business manager Paul Sroka gave the board fresh insight into the dispute between ALOSCAN and McKees Rocks borough over the former Crivelli Chevrolet property. An agreement was struck in early January between the parties. The properly was assessed at just under $2.1 million, right between the figures proposed by the two parties. ALCOSAN paid partial taxes until the dispute was resolved; the district will get at least $53,946 in revenue once the deal is finalized.

School Board Member Appreciation Month
Superintendent Megan Van Fossan took a moment from Thursday night’s proceedings to thank school directors for their service. January is school board member appreciation month. Said Van Fossan, “The nights you’ve spent going to football games, and sitting here deliberating,” goes to show just how dedicated the school board is. Van Fossan handed out certificates of appreciation to each board member.

School Board Vacancy
School Board President Cameron Culliver once again made a point of asking people to apply for the vacant school board seat representing Region 2 (Stowe Township). The position covers the remainder of former school director Ken Hohman’s term through the election this Fall. You can learn more about that posting here.
