Four Sto-Rox students were honored Thursday evening as they were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) at Focus on Renewal’s Father Ryan Arts Center in McKees Rocks. In an event organized by School Counselor Joe Herzing and emceed by current NHS members, the following students were recognized:
• Kelsie Arlotta
• Nevaeh Bocka
• Gianna Depaolo
• Cor'Dae Simmons
“This evening is not just a recognition of past accomplishments. but also a celebration of bright futures ahead,” said Dawn Marshall, a Jr./Sr. High School teacher who provided opening remarks. “As we honor these remarkable students, let us also express gratitude to the families, teachers, and mentors who have guided and supported them along the way.”
Current members of the NHS introduced each of the students and read information about their schoolwork and other interests. One by one, each student was introduced and given a special gown - Sto-Rox green, of course - and braids signifiying their new accomplishment. After taking the National Honor Society pledge (see below), they were fully inducted into the NHS.
“Thank you to the families of the NHS members for all of your dedication, love and support in helping your students grow into the special and successful young adults that you see in here tonight,” said Jr./Sr. High School teacher Joe Krajcovic. “Everyone here is in this together, along with the entire Sto-Rox community.”
Krajcovic also outlined four qualities that students can use to form and keep a positive mindset: love, appreciating and celebrating, respect, and support. He also handed out an assignment of sorts: a sheet detailing just how resilient, persistent, and tough Sto-Rox students are.

National Honor Society is the nation’s oldest and largest student recognition program, and it started in Pittsburgh in 1921 at Fifth Avenue High School. This year’s inductees join a proud tradition of excellence in Sto-Rox and across the country. Congratulations! Special thanks are also due for Counseling Secretary Ashley Vojtecky for event setup and coordination, School Board Member Angel Myers for decorations, and Dr. Erwin Weischedel for providing additional remarks.
National Honor Society Pledge: I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of the National Honor Society, for which I have been selected. I will be true to the principles for which it stands. I will be loyal to my school, and I will maintain and encourage high standards for scholarship, service, leadership and character.
