Students and staff are preparing for an annual rite of passage for students: Pennsylvania System School Assessments, or PSSAs. Every April, per the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), schools test students in grades 3 through 8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Students in grades 5 and 8 are tested in Science.
In Sto-Rox, testing will start with ELA assessments on April 21, 22, and 23. Math assessments will follow on April 28 and 29, and Science assessments will take place on April 30 and May 1. Letters to parents/guardians affected by PSSAs are linked below.

According to PDE, the PSSA is a “standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment which provides students, parents, educators and citizens with an understanding of student and school performance related to the attainment of proficiency of the academic standards.”
Testing helps staff identity students’ knowledge and ability at various grade levels. Test scores are shared only with students’ schools and help teachers identify students “who may be in need of additional educational opportunities.” Schools can also use test scores to develop and improve curriculum and instruction.
