“During my time at Sto I had some amazing teachers, some of whom I teach with because they’re now my colleagues,” she said. “The level of care I’ve seen people in education put in…just hearing the way that they talk about what do just really inspired me.”

Rippole initially went to school for communications in Hawaii, but felt the call to return home and go to school for education at Point Park University.

“You miss the way people say ‘pop,’” she joked.

Rippole puts her communication skills to work by teaching a public speaking class for 9th-12th graders, while holding down her duties teaching 9th and 11th graders English. Rippole showed off assignments done by her students based on their work reading “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

Rippole also speak about reestablishing roots in the community, as a teacher and a neighbor.

“I moved back into my childhood house….and it was really important for me to invest in my community,” she said. “What happens in the community is ultimately what affects (students) when they’re walking through my door every day. If I’m a participant actively, and I’m trying to make my small corner of the world a better place, then I can tell them that they do the same thing.”
