WTAE's Andrew Stockey Visits Sto-Rox Media Class

A mainstay of WTAE’s news and sports came to Sto-Rox Jr./Sr. High School on Tuesday to teach some tricks of his trade to students. Andrew Stockey spoke to a junior high class that is is part of a partnership among Sto-Rox School District, Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation, and the Gazette 2.0.

Stockey helped students as they conducted interviews of teacher Ken Lex and site coordinator/assistant football coach Brendan Blair. Throughout the course, students will learn media skills - like interviewing - with help from local media figures like Stockey. The goal is to increase media literacy and help students interact and build stronger bonds with their school and community.

Stockey sat with students as they posed questions to Lex and Blair. He encouraged them as they pressed both men - Sto-Rox graduates - about what life was like in Sto-Rox as they grew up there, and how they found their current roles. Stockey also taught students how to follow up, greet, and thank interview subjects. As he pointed out, the skills students learn here aren’t just for careers in media - they can translate to many other professions. Assisting the students with capturing their video and audio was Curtis Reeves, a longtime videographer who is also helping with this class. The students will edit and eventually present their interviews to a wider audience, including the Sto-Rox School District YouTube page.
