Girls in the Sto-Rox School District are getting a chance to hit the gridiron as part of a new pilot program tied to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Sto-Rox Girls Flag Football Team is part of an effort to make flag football a high school sport sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, or PIAA.
Lauren Ferragonio, head of security at Sto-Rox Jr./Sr. High School, is the coach of the Sto-Rox squad. She has a proven track record: Ferragonio has won two national championships playing on the offensive line of the Pittsburgh Passion. She also won a gold medal playing with the U.S. Women’s National Football Team in 2017. Recently, Ferragonio’s girls got a boost from Passion owner Teresa Conn and former Passion QB/current offensive coordinator Lisa Horton; they came out to help teach these Vikings about the game.
Sto-Rox’s first contest is coming up on Sunday, April 2. We’ll pass along more details about the schedule as they become available. Good luck to our girls!
