May 5, 2017. Since then, 2,145 days have elapsed. That’s 306 weeks, six graduating classes, and - most importantly - 44 games the Sto-Rox Vikings Baseball Team had gone without a win.
That streak ended Monday.
Sto-Rox (WPIAL Class 3A, Section 2) beat Springdale (WPIAL Class A, Section 2) in the season opener, 4-3. The first game of the year brought with it a new coaching staff: Brian Browning, and assistant Alec Bopp, brought on board by new Athletic Director Josh Kemp.
“You would have thought we won the championship by the way I was acting,” laughed Kemp. He and a group of hearty fans braved chilly and windy conditions to watch Sto-Rox start the season with a win.
Sto-Rox will be in action again on Thursday when the Vikings travel to Clairton to take on the Bears (WPIAL Class A, Section 3) at 4:00 p.m. The Vikings’ next home game is Monday, April 3 against Avonworth (Class 3A, Section 2).
